Turkey - Earthquake

On August 17th, a devastating earthquake, with tremors registering as high as 6.7 on the Richter Scale, shook 6 major cities in northwestern Turkey. Thousands of innocent lives were taken and countless are rendered homeless, struggling to survive without adequate food, shelter, clothing and medicine.

The governor of District 2430 requests international assistance to provide immediate relief to the victims of this terrible calamity. To support relief efforts, funds can be made payable directly to "Güvernörlük Hesabi," Account #38-14876-11, and sent to EGS Bank, Mareşal Çakmak Caddesi Modern Işhani, 31200 Iskenderun, Hatay, Turkey [Swift Code for wire transfers: EGSYTRISA]. Funds may also be forwarded via The Rotary Foundation. Make checks payable to The Rotary Foundation, earmark them for disaster relief in District 2430, and send to The Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 75133, Chicago, IL 60675-5133, USA. Districts are also encouraged to utilize SHARE District Designated funds allocated to the Humanitarian Programs category for the Rotary year 1999-2000 (maximum of US$10,000). To do this, district governors must submit a signed authorization to Marisa Rodriguez in The Rotary Foundation (fax: 847-866-1894). Please note that all contributions for disaster relief are forwarded to the disaster relief account established by the district and are appropriated at the discretion of the district governor.
